Justice League War DVD review

I got to buy the latest DC Universe animated movie, Justice League War, based on the New 52 comics series by Geoff Johns and Jim Lee. This is about the superheroes coming together in their formative years and someone said elsewhere that this mirrors the Bruce Timm animated series Justice League’s pilot episode. Upon watching it I agree, but instead of Martian Manhunter, Aquaman, and Hawkgirl, we have in their place Green Lantern Hal Jordan, Cyborg, and Shazam. They showed how Victor Stone became Cyborg and it was pretty graphic considering it was PG-13. Poor Hal, he was being used as comic relief and exactly how Geoff Johns written him. The New 52 is built around the favorites of Johns and Lee – Batman and Green Lantern – as they stayed intact while everyone and everything else around them changed.

In Dark Knight Returns animated movie, Batman defeated Superman as it showed how he could defeat him. Here was the response to that in what happens when Superman beats Batman. I’m glad they had to do it as it was a lot more realistic and I hope they use it in the upcoming Man of Steel sequel. Wonder Woman shined pretty well in the fights and she had her moments, especially when dealing with the protesting public. A lot of people were unhappy in how Superman and Wonder Woman were written as characters, but this is the New 52 version of them as I don’t expect them to be like the classic iconic versions we know them to be.

The main villain is Darkseid and showed he can be a threat to a League, hell he even broke Green Lantern’s arm. There’s nothing like seeing Superman fighting Darkseid either in post-Crisis or New 52. The movie is shown in widescreen with a 5.1 surround sound. There are no special features, but rather a trailer of the next DCU animated movie Son of Batman. The art and animation of Justice League War is excellent and similar to the styles of Justice Leagues: Crisis On Two Earths/ Doom and Young Justice. This is the first of the main continuity for the New 52 so it serves as a launching pad. The Batman for the next animated movie will be the same as the one here. Excellent animated movie as DC trumps Marvel in this area.
