Living For The Future

Superman/ Batman Public Enemies review

I had the fortune to watch the animated movie online in YouTube before I bought the single-disc edition. The movie is based on the comic story of the same name by writer Jeph Loeb and artist Ed McGuinness, whose art is coming to life in the animated movie. The emphasis on the movie is on the relationship between the two greatest superhero characters ever, Superman and Batman.

It had the epic widescreen feel to it as well as it should because the story has Lex Luthor elected President of the United States and uses that power to tarnish Superman. He sends other heroes and villains to go after him and destroy him. Only Superman and Batman are the only outlaws under the administration of President Luthor and only they’re the ones who knew the truth about him.

The relationship between Superman and Batman is like yin/ yang and day & night. Despite the differences, they have several things in common – they both seek justice and they adopt the no-killing stance. We see them at their best and deadliest when their backs are against the wall against the other heroes and villains that are sent by President Luthor. It’s slam-bang action at its finest.

Power Girl, Captain Atom, and Toyman Hiro Okumura have substantial roles in this movie. Lois did not appear until the very end, but it wasn’t about her. They didn’t have both Superman and Batman’s supporting characters in it either. There is no Clark Kent, but there was a bit of Bruce Wayne in there. The voices from the DC Animated Universe have reprised their roles and they never missed a beat and chemistry. For Kevin Conroy, this is his second DCU animated movie.

If the movie has one weakness, it’s that this is the shortest movie out of all the other DCU animated movies. It would have been nice if they include things such as the Kingdom Come Superman and the aforementioned supporting characters for both Superman and Batman. This has become among my favorite and it’s a high-recommender. There should be a new TV series based on the continuity of this animated movie.
