Supergirl – Luthors review

After Medusa, the show was veered off track with plots that had nothing to do with the overall season storyline that is the threat of Cadmus. We have not seen Lena and Lillian Luthor since Medusa and they have returned in a big way, along with Metallo John Corben. Here we see Lena visiting her mother Lillian at a prison on Kara’s suggestion and Metallo breaks out Lillian from the courts. Everyone but Kara believes that Lena Luthor is guilty mainly because she is a Luthor. Kara’s willingness to defend Lena puts her at odds with James, who thinks she has more faith in her than in he as Guardian. Kara has a good reason for it, but I don’t think the writers were writing for Kara in this one.

I can’t believe James saying that he doesn’t need protection after he got beaten by Metallo, which proves Kara’s disapproval of him to be right. How did he knew that Metallo was at the prison? They also need to decide who Winn works for – the DEO or James. Eventually it will become a problem between all parties and you can’t have 2 or 3 groups fighting crime. The end scene with Kara and James is the friendship we know and love from the first season as James is more effective running a major newspaper company like Catco. Who has time to be Guardian when they have deadlines to meet?

The flashbacks show young Lena’s adoption into the Luthors and we’re shown a young Lex and his dad, Lionel. So much for the idea of John Glover reprising his role as Lionel. The young Lex looks a lot like the young Bruce Wayne from the Gotham series. I guess this is the closest thing we’ll get to a crossover between Supergirl and Gotham. There are Easter eggs such as Lex’s exo-suit. They have restored Lena Luthor as the season’s main villain.

The climax of this episode was the highlight as Supergirl proceeds to risk herself while Metallo’s Kryptonite will explode producing a nuclear reaction. This is the Supergirl we know and love from the first season and has been missing since the first season finale. We need more of this for the rest of the season and I wonder how much of the formula from the first season was transferred to the second season. It was also nice to see Kara’s worklife in Catco. Overall this is about Kara being caught in the middle of a power struggle between Lena and Lillian Luthor much like in Smallville, where Clark was caught in the middle between Lex and Lionel.

The end of the episode leads into next week that gives us the appearance of Mxyzptlk. This is one of those episode I’m looking forward to. A great episode overall here.
