Living For The Future

The Flash – Elseworlds Part 1 review

The crossover begins with the opening scene that we’ve been seeing in Supergirl, Arrow, and Flash where Earth-90 was destroyed and that the 1990 Flash survived. The main emphasis was on the switch between Barry Allen and Oliver Queen where they are living each other’s lives with Oliver as Flash and Barry as Green Arrow. Between the two of them, Barry quickly adapted to being the Green Arrow more than Oliver adapted to being the Flash.

Unfortunately Barry’s team and likely Oliver’s team don’t believe them as they go to Earth-38 to meet Supergirl, who introduces her cousin Superman and reporter Lois Lane in Smallville. It was nice to see them use the Smallville opening, theme song, and the Kent farm so that it likely the only Smallville Easter egg and the Smallville moment that Stephen Amell was talking about. I also felt they were stalling for time to get to the part of going to Earth-38 because that was really where things pick up.

The center of Part 1 was really what Barry and Oliver are feeling right now being in each other’s places and what drives them forward. Lois is clearly siding with Barry since she sees Oliver as a jerk. Even Iris doesn’t like Oliver either due to him being in jail. I wish Lois went with the heroes so she could interact with Iris about journalism.

This Superman and Lois Lane has possessed the things we liked about them for the past 80 years and they have chemistry that would make both Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder proud. I also enjoyed the scene between the Super cousins and I wondered what Clark was going to ask Kara before Barry and Oliver’s arrival.

The team-up of Superman, Supergirl, Flash, and Green Arrow against Amazo was one of the highlights. This is what the Justice League movie should have been in terms of how Superman was used. I felt that was a shot at the Justice League movie big time.

They were all starting to put together that someone is behind reality being warped and it originated in Gotham City, where we see Batwoman appear at the end. So Batwoman is likely in all three parts than we originally thought. I guess Sherloque Wells is also from Earth-38 since he has an ex-wife there and asked Clark to deliver his alimony check to her as Clark returns to Earth-1.

The Monitor’s presence is felt in the beginning and end of part 1 and warns Cisco about the things to come in the future.

Great way to start off the crossover as this has succeeded where the Justice League movie did not. Looking forward to the next two parts to see how it all pans out.
