Actress and film director Penny Marshall passed away at the age of 75 due to diabetes and lung cancer. She is best know for playing Laverne from the Laverne and Shirley TV series with co-star Cindy Williams. After the show’s run, Marshall went into film directing and did films like Jumping Jack Flash and Big, with the latter marking her the first female director to score a movie hit that grossed over $100 million. Other directing credits include A League of Their Own, Awakenings, Preacher’s Wife, Renaissance Man, and Riding In The Car With The Boys.
Marshall expanded into producing when she did Cinderella Man and Bewitched. She and Williams reunited for the TV series Sam and Cat. She opened doors for many female directors and her contributions in the film and TN industry are cemented, including a Hollywood Walk of Fame star with Williams. Penny Marshall will be missed by the show business community worldwide.
