Living For The Future

Response To Another Smallville Interview

TV Guide has posted their question-and-answer interview with Smallville producer, Al Gough, and some of the answers have excited me, while others have disturbed me.

-Clark’s journey revolves around Kara – I have no problem with Kara as long as she serve her cousin’s needs in his journey to become Superman, but not the other way around. The purpose of supporting characters is to provide the needs of the leading character, not the other way around like we saw in the last season where the leading character of Clark Kent was providing the needs of a guest-star like Green Arrow. That can’t be repeated in this season with Supergirl. Clark will learn how to fly and more about his Kryptonian heritage, especially the House of El.

-Clark’s relationship with Lana defines him and is the reason for hooking up with Lois – First off, Clark is defined by how he was raised by his parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent and his humanity in helping others. Lois Lane is equally iconic as her future husband, Superman, and is never second-best to any other female, especially Lana Lang. If his relationship with Lana defines him, then Clark must be blind and has not grown up. I don’t want to see Clark regressing after the last two episodes of the 7th season that got off to a strong start.

-Chloe will be in quasi-Watchtower mode – I have no problem with Chloe serving as Watchtower to Clark and the other heroes because I feel it’s best for her to leave the Daily Planet to Lois and start working for Green Arrow as his intel.

-A possible formation of the Legion of Doom – This one I’ll be very happy about with Lex Luthor, Brainiac, and Bizarro forming the nascent version of the Legion of Doom much like last season’s Justice League. This will likely happen during Brainiac’s 4-episode return.

-No Tights, No Flights still around – It’s still around for Clark, but Kara, Martian Manhunter, and Bizarro are all flying in this season. Clark will get flying lessons from
his cousin even if he falls repeatedly. How can Clark expect to become Superman if he doesn’t fly?

-The Fake Pregnancy Story explained…offscreen – So, Al explains it offscreen instead of onscreen. You could have saved the last season if you executed that
explanation onscreen instead of simply telling us that. Sorry, but we go by what’s onscreen not by what you say. Besides, the pregnancy story was a dead-end from
 the start.

That’s the first part of the Q & A from TV Guide as he needs to do something to make the viewers happy if he expects to get high ratings and an eighth season.
