Living For The Future

Smallville – Hex review

Hex is the conclusion of the storyarc of Clark’s secret identity. By the time of this episode, Clark has already knew what he wanted and that’s being both the Red-Blue Blur and the Daily Planet Reporter. He has gotten over Lana and wanting a normal life without powers. Clark has also come to terms with the death of his fathers, Jor-El and Jonathan Kent. He could’ve figured it out that Lois is really Chloe and could’ve broken through Zatanna’s spell over him. The highlight of this episode for me was Clark superjumping to prevent Zatanna from bringing her father back from the dead at the cost of Chloe’s life.

Speaking of Zatanna, this marks the live-action debut for the mistress of magic portrayed by Serinda Swan. She has captured the character perfectly in both the look and essence. Separately, both Clark and Oliver have set Zatanna on the right path. The plot of her wanting the magic book back should have been emphasized more so than Chloe impersonating Lois.

This episode benefited Chloe more than anyone else because it was more about clarifying her role as Watchtower for the Justice League after living Lois’ life at the Daily Planet and working with Clark. I wonder if her newfound attitude has stemmed from her jealousy of Lois.

Erica Durance surprises me with her portrayal of Chloe down pat. It was funny seeing Lois talking to Lois and her trying to hit Clark with the metal doorknob. The endscene between her and Clark addressed what happened between them in Infamous. It’s clear that Lois will be more interested in the Red-Blue Blur than Clark at this point in Clark’s journey.

This is the first time we see Oliver since Requiem and we see him in the LuthorCorp building office since Queen Industries merged with it. Out of all the characters, Oliver has interacted with Zatanna the most. There is no interaction between he and Clark in this episode. He told Chloe that Clark and Bart are working together in Keystone City, which is the home of the original Flash Jay Garrick.

Jimmy Olsen was supposed to be in this episode, but his scenes were cut out. Because of this, Jimmy’s episode count for this season will be 11.

What moved forward? Clark has gotten over Lana and life without powers and knows of the situation between Chloe, Jimmy, and Davis. Chloe has gotten over her reporting phase and is now full-time Watchtower. Lois is more interested in the Red-Blue Blur. Oliver has got Zatanna’s number and gets the Justice League rolling again. Zatanna now takes her show on the road and will learn her craft from the magic book.

Solid filler episode by Bryan Miller.
