Van's Inner Universe

Living For The Future

Smallville – Kent review

We are back from the final hiatus with an episode that starts off the final run of episodes. Kent is the sequel to Luthor where Clark returns to the parallel universe and Ultraman Clark Luthor returning. This has the debut of alternate Jonathan Kent as well as alternate Lois returning as well. It’s  written by showrunners Peterson and Souders with Genevieve Sparling doing the story. The episode is directed by Jeannot Swarcz. The theme of the episode is choices and holding on to things that prevent growth.

Clark Kent meets Clark Luthor for the first time because Clark destroyed his Kryptonian Mirror Box while Clark Luthor still has his. As our Clark returned to the parallel universe, we learn through him that the alternates Lois and Oliver were married and that Clark Luthor killed alternate Oliver. We see how alternate Jonathan makes his dramatic entrance and spits on alternate Oliver’s casket as he blames him more than Clark Luthor for the loss of his Kent Farm. Our Jonathan has taught Clark everything that it reflects back to alternate Jonathan thus giving him the strength to move forward and reconcile with the Martha of that world. The way Clark returned to the real universe is similar to the one in Void.

Meanwhile Clark Luthor resumes his relationship with our Tess as he wants her to join him or die. Unlike Lana in Persona where she can’t distinguish Clark and Bizarro Clark, Lois immediately figured out that it’s not our Clark but Clark Luthor returning as she tried to call Tess and gets Dr. Hamilton to help her bring Clark back from the parallel universe using the destroyed Mirror Box, which he restored. I was glad that Lois and Dr. Hamilton got along better this time around than that unnecessary false start in Patriot.

The fight between both Clarks is awesome and they did another flight tease through Clark Luthor. Seeing that Clark Luthor flies and our Clark still can’t destroys the notion of embracing his Kryptonian heritage to fly. Clark set him on the path of redemption when he sends him back to his world’s Fortress of Solitude. Whatever Clark Luthor does is going to be the opposite of our Clark.  It looks like Clark either super-speed on the walls or has jumped up to save Tess from Clark Luthor.

Dr. Hamilton may be the key to prevent Tess from turning against her friends and they learn about what Gold Kryptonite does to Clark. I doubt they’d use it to end Clark’s career before it has even started and he’s not Superman yet.

Clark’s interactions with alternate Jonathan has caused him to make the decision of moving to Metropolis as it’s another step towards his destiny. He may call the realtor to buy the apartment and not sell the farm as both Martha and Conner might need to move in when Martha’s Senate run is over.

While Luthor was a good episode, this was miles better in terms of character growth and plot advancement. One of the better episodes from Peterson, Souders, and Sparling. I will add this among the episodes I liked from this season.
