Ghostbusters: Afterlife review

This review is for the regular DVD edition. Because of Ivan Reitman’s passing, I decided to buy the regular DVD edition of Ghostbusters Afterlife, which is the sequel of the first two films. The film is a tribute to Harold Ramis and is now a tribute to Ivan Reitman, who produced it. The film centers around Egon Spengler, who left the team and took all the equipment with him to Oklahoma to deal with Gozer and the ghosts. Unfortunately Egon died trying to fight them and it’s left to his daughter and grandchildren to pick up the pieces.

We are introduced to Egon’s daughter Callie and his grandchildren Trevor and Phoebe, who are evicted from their home and moved to Oklahoma, where they inherited a two-story home that Egon owned. It’s there they start discovering Ghostbusters equipment at the same time Gozer and the ghosts were roaming around. Other characters include Mr. Grooberson, Podcast, and Lucky. Grooberson is falling in love with Callie while Phoebe is friends with Podcast. At the same time Trevor is in a relationship with Lucky. It’s interesting to see how we get pairs of relationships happening.

If Jeanine isn’t Callie’s mother, then what’s the point of everything she and Egon went through? Her and the original Ghostbusters also had substantial cameos in the film. It’s the passing of the torch from one generation to the next and this was a great way to do it. Especially the climax that no one saw coming and it was heartfelt and touching at the same time.

The regular DVD comes with a 20-minute featurette about the making of Ghostbusters Afterlife and it’s a single-DVD edition that I got from Wal-Mart at a great price between $17-19. Thank you both to Harold Ramis and Ivan Retman who gave us a great film franchise that will be enjoyed for generations to come. Great sequel to the original Ghostbusters.
